Boxes Brimming with Opportunity
Service has been a big part of my life for many years. I have enjoyed doing service projects because they make me feel like I have accomplished something great that is helping others tremendously. One of the service projects that I do every year is with my Girl Scout troop. We help the people who are less fortunate than us by packing boxes full of food, placemats, and centerpieces that are normally consumed or used on Thanksgiving.
The service project is normally after school with my Girl Scout troop. The first activity that we do is create placemats by using markers, stickers, colored pencils and large, thin pieces of paper. Once we had finished the placemats we started on our next activity creating the center pieces. The center pieces are miniature turkeys that are made out of empty tissue boxes, construction paper, sticker eyes, and glue. The final project, which is my favorite one, is stuffing the boxes full of food and decorating them with fun, tiny construction paper leaves, pumpkins, and turkeys just to make the boxes way more festive.
The impact that this experience has had on me was fantastic because it was helping me understand more clearly that the world is definitely not perfect in any way, shape, or form. It also helped me understand that not everyone can look forward to coming home from school or work to find plenty of food on their plate. That is why us Girl Scouts created this tradition of helping to weaken hunger every Thanksgiving as best we can. I love this experience because I know what the outcome of the project is, and also because it involves my favorite hobby, drawing. Another reason why I love this tradition is because we are all able to use our creative minds to create something beautiful for these people.
Like I had said before this service project has made me feel like I have accomplished something great in my life that is significantly helping others. The reason why I said this is because over the years I have gained more and more love for the people in need, and also have been looking forward to helping them when I can. With the help of my beloved Girl Scout troop we can work together and do great things for the greater good of humankind, such as this food drive, painting shelters, and many other fantastic projects. This is why I do, and always will, enjoy doing service for the people in need.
